Facing a surge in homelessness and associated public health risks, the City of Los Angeles sought rapid solutions to protect its unhoused population from diseases such as Hepatitis A, typhus, and tuberculosis.
Inspired by Sprung Structures’ success in San Diego’s Bridge Shelter program, the city engaged Sprung to support its Bridge Home initiative.
As of Fall 2023, 13 Sprung structures have been installed at 12 sites, providing 24/7 managed care environments for residents. The structures’ aesthetic appeal, including optional glazing walls, allows natural light to create a brighter, more positive atmosphere for occupants.
The first bridge shelter, built in 2019 at 1533 Schrader Boulevard, measures 18.3 m × 36.6 m (60’ × 120’). Fully insulated and constructed on an elevated concrete foundation, it accommodates up to 100 residents, along with office and day-use spaces. Nearby trailers provide restroom and shower facilities, ensuring a secure and functional environment for those in need.
