In early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread, RVH partnered with Infrastructure Ontario to quickly expand patient care capacity with a regional Pandemic Response Unit.
The facility was intended to serve as an overflow unit for hospitals across the Simcoe Muskoka region and needed to be delivered rapidly and on budget.
Sprung delivered two fully insulated structures within 10 weeks. The primary patient care building measures 15.2 m × 50.3 m (50’ × 165’) and houses 70 patient bays. It features HVAC for air filtration and ventilation, a dedicated oxygen system, nurse call systems at each bay, nursing stations, and a raised medical-grade floor.
The secondary structure measures 7.0 m × 32.0 m (23’ × 105’) and serves as a dedicated washroom facility with 10 patient bathrooms and a shower. Two fully insulated connecting corridors were also provided: one measuring 3.05 m × 86.9 m (10’ × 285’) connecting the patient care building to the hospital, and another linking the two Sprung structures.
