Joseph Brant Hospital

In March 2020, Joseph Brant Hospital needed to increase bed capacity in anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 patients.

To provide a fast, safe solution, the hospital partnered with Sprung to design and deliver a temporary Pandemic Response Unit on hospital grounds.

The fully insulated 15.2 m × 50.3 m (50’ × 165’) structure added 93 patient beds and was completed and operational within just two weeks, in collaboration with BLT Construction. A 10’ × 110’ (3.05 m × 33.5 m) connecting corridor linked the unit to the hospital’s South Tower, with an air-lock system maintaining a negative pressure environment to minimize the spread of infectious particles.

This unit relieved pressure on acute care spaces by caring for patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms, providing oxygen therapy, special medications, and ongoing monitoring. Later, it was repurposed as a vaccination site, demonstrating the structure’s flexibility and speed of deployment.
